Mecila Working Papers n° 83 – 2025 | The Metropolis and its Social Life: Conviviality, Urban Studies, and Thoughts on Thugs / Talja Blokland

The paper questions why urban studies about conviviality in everyday social life often ignore hate, fear, and violence in cities.

It critiques the common focus on friendly, walkable neighborhoods and the idea that violence happens “somewhere else,” not in familiar public spaces.

Using the figure of the “thug” (as seen in pop culture and activism), it argues that violence and exclusion are part of urban life and must be included in how we understand social dynamics in cities.
