Mecila Working Papers nº 93 2025 | Spiritistic Mythology and Conviviality in Brazilian Epic Poetry: Goyania (1896) by Manuel de Lopes Carvalho Ramos / Roger Friedlein
The article looks at a little-known Brazilian epic poem from 1896 and shows how its spiritist mythology helps us think about how different cultures coexist under unequal and violent historical conditions.
The poem tells the story of colonial conquest alongside an Indigenous love story, linking them through a shared spiritual world made up of Indigenous, Christian, and universal spirits.
By imagining these spirits as communicating across cultures, the poem creates a sense of coexistence and dialogue that partly offsets the violence at the heart of its historical narrative.
