Victoria Paniagua is currently a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from Duke University in 2018, and during 2018-2019 she was a Visiting Fellow at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Victoria’s dissertation, which is the basis of her current book project, was the recipient of the 2019 Mancur Olson Award given for the best dissertation in political economy completed in the previous two years by the American Political Science Association. In this work, she explores why, how, and to what extent economic elites influence developmental and redistributive policies. To answer these questions, she examines the long history of elites in Argentina and Chile combining historical narratives with network analysis and other statistical methods, leveraging over a century of data from previously untapped historical archives. In other ongoing projects, she studies how factors other than the influence of elites shape redistributive outcomes: clientelism, corruption, and financial markets’ behavior.
